Indonesia is home to numerous beautiful cliffs and climbing spots. However, it’s still very much underrated and unknown as a sport climbing destination, except among enthusiasts. Climbing Nusantara aims to change that!

We organize trips not only for experienced climbers, but also for beginners who would like to experience a rock climbing holiday in Indonesia. We have a dream to introduce our rock climbing scene and rich nature to the world.

Tri Andikal, better known as Eka, is the founder and visionary of this new endeavor. He has been climbing and developing routes all over Indonesia (most notably in Padang and Bandung). More importantly, he will tailor each trip to adapt to your climbing level and preference.

Sample Itinerary: 4D3N Padang Climbing Holiday

You will arrive at Minangkabau International Airport in West Sumatra, where one of our friendly drivers will pick you up. It takes approximately 3 hours to drive from the airport to your first accommodation in Lembah Harau.

In the meantime, sit back and enjoy the journey. You will see glimpses of the bustling city before the view transforms into a breathtaking landscape of traditional Padang houses, rolling hills, and lush valleys.

Before you check into your accommodation, our driver will take you to a local eatery where you’ll get a taste of iconic West Sumatran dishes, including the world-famous rendang. Then, it’s time to relax in your hotel room and get a good night’s sleep before we hit the crags tomorrow!

Climbing at Lembah Harau

Before kicking off your first full day on this rock climbing holiday in Indonesia, you will enjoy a delicious and filling breakfast at your accommodation.

We will then explore Lembah Harau, one of the most famous spots in this province among rock climbers. It’s an epic and historic site with both hard walls as well as easier routes for beginners. There are multiple crags here and your climbing guide will choose the perfect ones for your level.

Lunch will be served in the middle of your climbing session. Expect freshly cooked local food such as rice, meat, and some vegetables. We will also provide snacks and drinks to keep you fueled.

Climbing at Silokek

Another climbing destination we will tackle on this trip is Silokek Geosite, which we will visit on your third day. The village of Silokek itself is known for its natural attractions, diverse wildlife, culture, and lush surroundings, from mountains to rivers. Local athletes and hobbyists often climb the crags here, but the crowds are usually very small, so you can enjoy a quiet and private day of climbing.

Rafting or Paragliding Adventure

For your third day in West Sumatra, you may opt out of a full climbing day at Silokek and try your hands at other thrilling activities. Go white water rafting through _ river. This is a fun way to explore the unspoiled nature of the area. You will pass through waterfalls, forests, gorges, and wildlife, and maybe bump into local fishermen at work.

In contrast, you can also take to the skies and get a magnificent bird’s-eye view of the vast landscapes by paragliding. Feel the cool wind as you sail through the open air from _ feet. You may even spot the cliffs you climbed yesterday from afar!

Climbing at Andaleh

On the morning of your fourth day, we will take you to Andaleh, where the crags stand tall amid lush paddy fields. The routes here are vertical walls and measure up to 50 meters in height.

From Andaleh, the airport is a 1.5-hour drive. You can rest during the car ride and arrive at the airport refreshed, ready to catch your evening flight. Alternatively, we can arrange for you to stay an extra night closer to the city center. You can embark on a culinary adventure in Padang and go sightseeing for the rest of the afternoon.

Accommodation

This Indonesian rock climbing holiday includes a room in a 2-star hostel, which can accommodate two guests (you and a friend!).

You may opt for an accommodation upgrade to a 4-star hotel or equivalent for an additional fee.

Getting to Padang

The easiest way to reach Padang is to fly to Minangkabau International Airport, the capital city of West Sumatra province. The average flight from Jakarta to Padang takes 1h 50mins. There are also regular flights from Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia, as well as many other major international flights.

This climbing holiday package includes transfers to and from the airport to your accommodation. No need to worry about arranging transport while you’re here!

West Sumatra

West Sumatra is home to some of the most beautiful and authentic mountain landscapes in Indonesia. The crags are generally frequented only by local climbers and were where Eka grew up climbing. He knows the rocks like the back of his hand and the local climbing guides are like family to him.

The most famous destination has to be Lembah Harau with 75 sport climbing routes ranging from 4c+ to 8c+. Other spots include Andaleh and Silokek, both of which you can check out on our climbing holiday.

West Java

If you’re staying in Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, then this is probably the most convenient destination for you as you can reach many of the crags in approximately 4 hours by car.

Citatah is a popular destination for local Bandung residents as well as climbers in Jakarta looking for a mountainous escapade. The rock here is limestone and there are many beginner-friendly routes. There’s also the lesser-known area of Bongkok in Purwakarta, where the rock is made of Andesite. You can also find hiking trails nearby.
